Servet Kocyigit

After his graduation from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Servet Kocyigit was a resident at De Ateliers. Mobility is a focal concept in the work and world of Kocyigit. His work focuses on the relationship between the quest for understanding the human beings and the world around him and how this unfolds in forming cultural, individual, as well as collective memories and identities. He creates narratives that initiate a dialogue with diverse landscapes and historical episodes of different societies. In today's world where borders and crossings have turned into disputed topics and sources of contestation, the artist (re)imagines and (re)creates them.
Key works from his latest series will be presented in the exhibition through which Kocyigit moves into a new artistic territory: mapping. He appropriates this system of data compression to depict imaginary geographies on hand-sewn surfaces in his new collages. The hand labor and intricate stitching is nothing new to the artist as he has been using this method and tool in his work ever since his participation in the 9th Istanbul Biennial, 2005. However, with his new series he initiates a personal investigation into the limits, obstacles and the borders crossed. Kocyigit literally combines the different territories in his work through the medium of textile.
